Novel Exam: First Year - January 2003

Answer the Following Questions:

1. Despite the fact that “The Legacy” and “Such a Beautiful Voice that Comes from Within her” take place in two different cultures and societies, they share one thing in common, that is the social view of women. Discuss this view and show how it is presented through the two major female characters of the two stories. (18 marks)

2. “Louise” and “Miss Brill” are narrated in two different ways; how suitable is each method of narration, for the story it tells? (18 marks)

3. “There was nothing to do about him. It was Easter Sunday and the Fascists were advancing... It was a gray overcast day.... That and the fact that cats know how to look after themselves was all. the good luck that old man would ever have.”

Comment on these few lines at the end of “Old Man at the Bridge” and show how they are important regarding the development of the events in the story and the message the writer wants to convey. (14 marks)

4. “Twelve voices were shouting in anger and they were all alike.....The creatures, outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was.impossible to say which was which.”

a. How important are the italicized words in reflecting the structure of Animal Farm?

b. This passage, which occurs at the end of the novel, is significant in reflecting one of the major ideas that Orwell wanted to convey through Animal Farm. Explain this statement.                      (30 marks)
